Kerry

Kerry stepped out of the shower and dried off her silky, coco skin. She was anxious and feeling good that her ex-husband, Justin, had stopped by. They’d been divorced a year, but as of recently sparks had been lit that rekindled the love they once shared. Their romance was even hotter and steamier than ever before. Fourteen years of them being together had nothing on the past few months of them making sweet love to each other like they were still happily married. The sex was great and their conversations had certainly gotten better. To her, it was different and being with him felt somewhat new; reviving the old, spontaneous Kerry and breathing excitement back into her life.

She glanced in the body mirror and smiled, because she looked good. In a year’s time, she’d gotten her health back in check, feeling enthused about the progress she’d made. Her stomach was back flat and her thighs were trimmed down from the strenuous workouts she endured weekly at the YMCA. Her weight had dropped from two-hundred and twenty pounds to one hundred and seventy pounds of thickness in all the right places.

Rubbing the towel across her wet head as she stood in the body mirror naked, she thought about Justin and if there was a possibility that they’d ever get back together and be a family again. He’d hurt her in the past, but they had four children together, so maybe it was salvageable.

She threw the towel over on the side of the garden tub, and then slipped on a cotton, purple pair of booty shorts with a white fitted tank top showcasing the words
Very Sexy
in purple cursive writing on the front of it. She left her hair as it was; loose, curly and still damp from her washing it. She grabbed the Country Chic body lotion by Bath and Body Works and started applying it on her legs, thighs, feet, and arms. She then grabbed her cotton candy lip balm and rubbed some across her kissable lips then smiled at herself in the mirror, feeling confident. Finally, she stepped out of the bathroom with a seductive look on her face.

Justin lay on the bed, flipping through the channels on the TV, but he dropped the remote as soon as he saw Kerry standing there looking sexy as hell to him.

“Damn, I swear you get finer and finer every time I see you.” He said, patting the side of the bed with his hand. “Come here with your bad ass.”

Kerry grinned, happily making her way over to the bed. “I’m not bad.” She crawled on the bed in slow motion as Justin admired her curves and the way her round butt stuck out in the back of her booty shorts.

“Give me some sugar,” he said as Kerry leaned in towards his face, but stopped shy of lips. She looked in his eyes, feeling horny and ready to give up the goods.

“What are you gonna give me?” She asked with a wink.

Justin grinned, loving the attention that he was getting from Kerry. It may have seemed like a century ago, but he could remember that even after their first born son, she was good. They’d have heated sex anywhere and go out all the time, but after the birth of their second born, things changed. Justin didn’t know if it was because they’d had their first daughter and Kerry seemed more attached to her and less attracted to him, but it only got worse two years later, when she’d had their second daughter. By the time Ciara, the last of the bunch, was born it was a wrap. She’d gained almost sixty pounds and just didn’t care anymore about anything, except work and taking care of the kids. He seemed to be last on her list of priorities.

“Well,” she asked again. “What are you gonna give me?”

“I don’t know.” He said with a smile. “Let’s see.” Justin playfully began to wrestle with her until she was laying flat on her back and he was on top of her. “I’m about to give you this good loving.” He grinned then leaned down and passionately kissed Kerry’s soft lips. After a two minute session of tongue tango, Justin came up for air. “Damn, you taste good.” He said then started back kissing on her, except this time he went for the more sensitive area, her neck. Kerry was caught up in the moment as she moaned, grabbing the back of Justin’s head. She enjoyed every visit that he made to secretly come over and spend with her. Just as Justin’s hand slipped down inside her purple, cotton booty shorts, his phone started ringing.

At first, he attempted to ignore it, but Kerry’s body language said that he needed to address it. “It’s just her.” He whispered. “Don’t start acting like that.”

“It’s just her.” Kerry said, pushing him off of her. SHE HATED HER. It was the same woman calling his phone that Justin had left her for. “How long do you expect me to be your side chick?” She asked, feeling that their roles had certainly changed.

Justin frowned, taking in a much needed deep breath. He was irritated, feeling his dick growing down his thigh and not being able to relieve the pressure. “Come on, Buttercup. Pleeeeease,” he begged.

“You need to straighten your bitch,” Kerry said with a serious look on her face.

“So, you’re gonna let this come between us?”

“It’s what came between us in the first place.” Kerry argued with a roll of the eyes and a slight jerk of the neck.

“Baby, come on.” Justin continued to plead, grabbing at his dick and trying to push down the erection. He wanted Kerry bad and she was playing. He sure as hell hadn’t been getting any at home, because of him fucking around with her again. “You know that I’ve been coming over a lot lately. I ain’t fucking her.” No sooner than he could say that his phone rang again. Kerry quickly grabbed it off of the nightstand. The caller ID read,
Shannon.

“This bitch just keeps calling. I wonder what she’ll say if I answer it.”

Justin shook his head with a light smack of his lips. “Buttercup, hand me the phone. Don’t do this.” He said, feeling somewhat on edge since Kerry was now holding his phone acting like she was going to answer it.

“I should curse this bitch out.”

Justin’s eyes grew wider, because Kerry certainly had grown some big balls since they’d split up. She wasn’t the same woman that he used to take advantage of for years. “You should just give me my phone back.” He said, reaching for the ringing cell phone.

She acted like she was passing him the phone, but then held it back to tease him. “What are you going to say? I’ll give it to you if you tell her that you’re with me.”

“You know what,” he said, getting out of bed and grabbing his Levi jeans to put on. “Go ahead and answer it. I’m tired of this shit. I’m going to stay in a hotel room.”

Seeing him get his things to leave was the only reason why she threw his phone to the foot of the bed and didn’t answer it. Justin’s attempt to play reverse psychology seemed to be working as he sat his jeans back down on the chair, but then minutes later, Kerry’s cell phone began to ring.

Justin quickly frowned with a jealous expression on his face. “Oh, you’re trying to regulate my calls?” He pondered. “Who the hell is that calling you one o’clock in the morning?”

Kerry was just as shocked as she glanced over on the nightstand at her cell phone. She knew she’d been flirting and enjoying the single life, but there was no one else getting the goods and it shouldn’t have been anyone calling her that time of the morning.

She reached over on the nightstand and grabbed her phone, immediately checking the caller ID. There was no saved name and the number didn’t seem familiar.

“Who is that?” Justin asked, walking over trying to snatch her phone like he was the jealous one now.

“Don’t be trying to take my phone,” she said, tussling with him over her cell phone. He didn’t see a name, just a number and quickly answered it. Kerry was stunned and thinking to herself.

Let that bitch call his phone again. I got something for his ass.

“Yeah,” he answered quickly like he was running things. “Why are you calling my woman’s phone?”

Kerry instantly frowned. “Your woman?” she uttered. “Give me my phone!” She tried to grab it, but the stunned expression on Justin’s face stopped her in her tracks.

“What the
fuck you mean, your woman?” The person on the other end of the phone quickly asked. “Why the fuck are you even over there? Your children are sleeping this time of night, so don’t lie with your ratchet ass!” Shannon yelled in the phone. She’d called back from her home girl’s phone, hoping that something like this would happen so she’d catch him red handed.

“Uh,” Justin mumbled. He didn’t realize that Shannon would call Kerry’s phone if he didn’t answer his. She had certainly stepped up her private eye game. “Hey babe,” he said, trying to play it off.

“Hey babe, my ass!” She continued to yell at him, causing Kerry to snicker in the background as she laughed at the embarrassing look on Justin’s face.

“Why are you calling Kerry’s phone?” Justin asked like he had gotten irritated just that quickly.

“Don’t ask me any questions, muthafucka! What the fuck are you doing there this time of night?!” Shannon asked.

“Well uh,” he said trying to quickly think of a lie. “Ciara wasn’t feeling well.”

Kerry’s neck jerked like she was appalled. “Don’t be fucking lying on my baby!” She fussed, and then popped him upside the head with the palm of her hand.

Justin tried to cover up the phone, but it was too late. Shannon had heard all she needed to hear.

“Don’t worry nigga. Your clothes will be on the front lawn by the time you get here! You can take your lying ass right on back over there with your ex-wife once you get them!” Shannon continued.

“You better not throw my fuckin’ clothes out the door! It’s raining, woman!”  He snapped, looking over at Kerry who was about to die laughing at him. “Hello, hello,” he yelled in the phone, but Shannon had already ended their call. He looked over at Kerry. “You think this shit is funny, don’t you?”

“Yup,” she laughed out loud. “It’s very funny.”

Justin reached for his cell phone to call Shannon back. He had expensive gear and didn’t need her throwing his shit across the lawn to satisfy her resentment towards him.

“Yeah, call your lil bitch and while you’re dialing her number grab your clothes and put them on. You can see yourself out.” Kerry said like she wanted to smack the shit out of him again. “Talking about my baby isn’t feeling well. What the hell is wrong with you?!”

Justin grabbed his phone and his jeans then he paused as he thought about it.
Fuck it.
He thought as he threw his pants back over on the chair. “You’re gonna give me this pussy tonight.” He demanded, playfully tackling Kerry on the bed. Kerry giggled as they rolled around on her big king size bed wrestling. “She’s probably throwing my shit out the door as we speak.”

“That’s what you get for shacking up with a girl fresh out of high school.” Kerry grinned. “She doesn’t know any better.”

“She’s a Junior in college.” Justin attempted to correct her.

“Well, what was she when you started fucking around with her?” Kerry asked, giving him the side eye.

Justin paused for a minute as he lay on top of Kerry, staring down at her beautiful face. He didn’t want to talk about Shannon. If he wanted her to be the topic of discussion, he would’ve kept his ass at home.

“You thought that was a man for me, didn’t you?” Kerry laughed; liking the jealous side that Justin had just showed her.

“You so damn funny,” Justin joked while running his hand up Kerry’s shirt, massaging her perky breast. “Shit, I’m gonna make this worth it. If that crazy broad is throwing my clothes out the house then I’m gonna enjoy this steamy session.” As they lay under the cover, feeling and kissing all over each other, the bedroom door swung open.

“What the fuck?” Kerry whispered as Ciara entered the room rubbing her eyes and crying. Justin swiftly rolled out of the bed and onto the floor. He and Kerry had been creeping for the past couple of months, so letting Ciara see him there was not a good idea. She was already a daddy’s baby and wanted nothing more than for him to come back home.

Kerry jumped up. She was glad that Justin hadn’t taken her clothes off yet, even though he was hiding on the side of the bed in the buff.

“Come here,” Kerry said, calling Ciara over. “You okay?”

“No ma’am,” Ciara responded in her tiny voice. “My tummy hurts, mommy.”

Kerry rubbed her daughter’s head. “You don’t feel warm. Come on sweetheart, so I can give you some medicine for your tummy.” Kerry got out of bed and walked Ciara into the bathroom.

“Mommy,” Ciara cried out, holding her stomach. “It hurts.”

Kerry picked up the five year old and held her. “Okay, it’s gonna be alright.” She said, gently rubbing her back, and then she opened the medicine cabinet to grab the children’s Pepto Bismal. “You got to take this for mommy.” She said, feeling like her baby may have contracted a virus of some sort.

Ciara cried. She hated taking any kind of medicine. “I want Daddy,” she cried. Kerry rocked her in her arms.

“Come on, C. Just take it for me.” She said, knowing that Justin was the only one that could get Ciara to take any kind of medicine.

“Noooo Mommy,” she cried. “I don’t want it.”

“C, if you want to feel better you have to take it. Otherwise, I’m gonna have to take you to the doctor. We both know what the doctor may do.”

“I don’t want no shots,” she cried.

“Well, you have to take the medicine.” Kerry insisted just as Justin came creeping around the corner, feeling sorry for his baby girl. Kerry quickly shooed him away with her hand before Ciara could see him.

What the fuck is he thinking? He knows that Ciara will have a fit if she knew that he was here. He’d never be able to leave without breaking her heart again.

An hour later, Kerry was making her way back into the bedroom. Justin was still there, lying on the bed. She walked over to him and lay down beside him.

“How is she?” he asked.

“She’ll be fine. She finally went back to sleep.”

“Good,” he whispered, feeling bad that moments like this he’d miss, because he wasn’t living there anymore.

“I think you should go now,” she said.

“Why?” Justin asked out of curiosity.

“Because, that was a close call with Ciara catching you here; plus you have other issues you need to tend to at your own house.”

“I know but-”

“It’s already after two in the morning. Even though I actually enjoy doing this; I know how Shannon feels. Hell, I was once her. I don’t want to keep doing this.” Justin disappointedly shook his head. “Don’t act like that. You know I’m right. I have a long day tomorrow, anyway. Lauren will be here in the morning to micro braid my hair.”

Justin looked over at her; his feelings were exhausted for the night. The fight for a good time was over. Shannon already had him feeling some type of way, but Ciara had definitely blown any chances of him getting any. He knew that Kerry was right. So, he eased out of bed and grabbed his pants while putting them on. He pulled his plain white t-shirt over his head and started putting on his white Air Force One’s. Kerry just watched him dress in silence. She really didn’t want him to leave, but honestly it was for the best. Once he’d gotten himself together, he stepped over by the bed where she was sitting and kissed her softly on the forehead.

“Have a good night, Buttercup. I’ll see you later on when I pick up the kids for the weekend.”

“Okay,” she whispered. She loved him, but watching him leave a home where he once lived was starting to take a toll on her. Either he was going to start showing her that he wanted his family back or she was going to stop fucking around with him altogether.  “Lock the door behind you.”

“I got you,” he said then unhappily made his exit.

Chapter 1

Around seven that morning, Lauren woke up next to her new boo, Rich. She looked over at him and smiled as he slept peacefully. He was certainly one hot catch. His smooth brown skin always looked like the perfect tan, and it matched his deep brown eyes that seemed to stare into her soul. His hair was cut short with an ocean of waves. He had a slight overbite, but it didn’t take away from his handsome smile.

Lauren reached over and touched his face as her fingers traced his neatly trimmed goatee. “Hey babe,” she called out to wake him. His eyes slowly opened as he stared in her sweet face. “I’m gonna get on up so I can head over to Kerry’s. You know I’m doing her hair today.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that.” He said in a tired tone. “I’m just going to chill out here while you’re gone.”

Lauren definitely didn’t mind him chilling at her crib since he’d been practically living there for the past two months. However, in the three months that they’d been seeing each other all he wanted to do was eat up her food, chill out in her house, and hadn’t paid not one bill. If it wasn’t for the way he hung dick up in her, or the way he kissed her and complimented her, then she would’ve been gotten rid of him. He was good to her in other ways, but
other ways
was starting to not add up when her thousand dollar rent was due and he couldn’t help with it.

Meeting him three months earlier at Bianca’s wedding reception seemed to be the perfect timing, since Jamal had left her broken hearted. A part of her still loved her lying, cheating ass baby daddy, but another part of her was trying desperately to shake him. To all of her sisters, Rich was just a rebound and a distraction of how she really felt, but a good distraction he was. She didn’t care what they said. As long as he was good to her then that’s all that counted at moment.

“You know mom and dad’s anniversary is coming up soon. I was hoping that you’d come with me.” She said as she sat up in the bed next to him.

Rich smiled. “I’d love to come, but you know your sisters don’t like me much. I’d hate to intrude.”

“It’s not that they don’t like you. They just expect more from you.”

“Why should they expect anything from me?” He questioned, leaning up on his elbow as he spoke to her. “I’m your man, not theirs. I think they be concerned about the wrong things.”

Lauren disappointedly shook her head. “It’s not like that. They’re just used to me dating someone that has his own.” She tried to convince him.

“I do have my own.” He said.

Where at?
Lauren quickly thought, trying her best not to roll her eyes from his oblivious attitude towards anything that she tried to tell him to better himself.

“I’m just going through a rough patch right now and I need you to stand by me.” He added.

“I don’t have a problem with standing by you, but it comes a time Rich when I’d like for you to pay the tab sometimes when we go out to eat or buy the movie tickets. I’d like for you to hand me a hundred dollars here and there towards the utilities and or to be able to help me pay the rent. I mean, I just got my oil and brakes changed on my car.”

“Aaaah here we go,” he cut in, grabbing his head with his hand like he was tired of having these conversations.

“I’m sorry you feel this way, but you know I don’t even drive my own car anymore, because you have it more than I do. But, I was the only one paying for the services done to it.”

Rich smacked his lips a little. “Don’t act like you don’t have money, baby. Your bank account ain’t slacking for nothing.”

“You said the magic words, Rich… MY BANK ACCOUNT,” She reminded him with an attitude. “I love you, but you got to start stepping up to the plate. I need you to do better.” She sincerely said with a pout on her face.  “You have so much potential. You just don’t want to do anything with yourself.”

“I do whatever I need to do to take care of me.”

“And, I guess that would be leaching off of me?” Lauren pondered like she was appalled at that comment.

“I didn’t say that, so quit putting words in my mouth.”

“Well, you aren’t saying much of anything this morning that’s making sense. I honestly think that anything I ever say to you goes in one ear and out the other.”

“Nobody wants to hire a convicted felon, babe. I put in applications all the time. I’m trying here. You don’t want me back out in the streets, so what else am I supposed to do?” he questioned, feeling frustrated.

“I don’t know,” she said, getting out of bed. “But, you need to do something or I’m gonna start second guessing our relationship. I ain’t built to take care of no grown ass man that’s thirty-six years old. Hell, when my son turns eighteen, he’s gonna be on his own, too.”

“Yeah right,” he uttered. “You spoil him rotten.”

“Well, that is MY CHILD and it’s also MY MONEY. Plus, what the hell do you expect? He’s a three year old, my God.” She shook her head with a roll of the eyes as she stepped inside of her closet to find something to put on.

Rich was starting to feel some type of way. “You got a real foul mouth, you know that? You need to watch how you talk to me sometimes. I’m still a man, baby.”

“And, I’m still independently taking care of my own. So, until you can help out a little, you can continue to expect this attitude.”

“Yeah whatever,” he said and turned back over like he was going back to sleep.

Lauren didn’t say another word to him as she searched through the rack of clothes hanging up in her closet. She did love Rich, because he came in her life at the most vulnerable moment and put a smile back on her face. A smile that she thought was gone forever. The only problem was that his good looks and good dick was running off of time that he was about to lose if he didn’t get his shit together. She was tired of hearing the backlash from her sisters. Even her parent’s had started questioning her judgment in men. She’d left Jamal, a confused married man that had no problems taking care of her and their son, but his wife cut that short when she realized that he might leave her to be with them.

“This shit is for the birds,” she whispered as she grabbed a plain pair of denim jeans and a pink fitted Aeropostale t-shirt. She wanted to be comfortable since she’d be standing on her feet most of the day doing Kerry’s hair.  She started out of the closet and into the master bathroom to wash up just as her cell phone rang. Rich looked over his shoulder towards the ringing of the cell phone then put the cover over his head like he had an attitude.

Why the fuck is he mad? He should be good.
She thought as she walked over to the nightstand and grabbed her phone to answer it.

“What’s up, B?” She asked, realizing that it was one of her younger sisters.

“Nothing much, girl,” Bianca responded. “What are you doing?”

“I’m getting ready to head over to Kerry’s house. I’m micro braiding her hair today.”

“She did tell me that you were gonna be doing that today. I think I’ll make my way over there later, because you’re gonna be there all day fooling with that thick ass hair of hers.”

“Tell me about it,” Lauren said, but she didn’t mind. Any time spent with her sisters was always time well spent. “So, what’s up? Why are you up so early? It ain’t even eight o’clock, yet.”

“Yeah, I just had some things on my mind and needed someone to talk with.” Bianca said.

“Is everything good with you and Tory?” Lauren asked as she stepped inside the bathroom and closed the door. She knew that
nosy
would be trying to listen even though he was acting like he was going back to sleep.

“Everything is good with us. I can’t complain. I love my husband and he’s very good to us.”

“I thought so,” Lauren said, thinking about the big three seat 2014 Cadillac Escalade that he’d just brought Bianca for her birthday the week before. He unveiled the vehicle at her surprise birthday party. The party was lavish and definitely expensive.

“You know my husband is the best. He has to be heaven sent.” She said, thinking about Kory, her ex-boyfriend and the father to her one year old daughter. She sometimes still struggled with his untimely death about ten months prior, but Tory was there to lessen that pain. “Anyway, Tessa called me and needed a favor.”

“What kind of favor?” Lauren asked with a frown on her face as she sat on the side of the garden tub, turning the bath water on. She wasn’t one of Tessa’s biggest fans even though that was Bianca’s best friend.

“Well,” Bianca started. She was unsure if she should even bring it up, knowing how hard her sisters could be on poor Tessa. “She has lost her apartment and wants to move in with us for a month or so.”

Lauren’s eyebrows furrowed with a million thoughts running through her mind about that situation. “B, I don’t think that’s a good idea. You and your husband have only been married for three months. Y’all are still newlyweds. I don’t think you should move anyone in your home. I don’t care if you do have an extra guest room. You have five children and a husband that needs all of your attention. You don’t need Tessa moving in and turning things upside down.”

“I’ve thought about that, but she was there for me when I needed her the most.” Bianca said. She’d already contemplated if she should or shouldn’t. She just needed a listening ear and a little bit of advice.

“What does Tory have to say about that?” Lauren pondered.

“He has nothing to say except that it’s up to me. He doesn’t want to come between our friendship nor will he ever say no to me. So, that doesn’t help much.”

“He just wants to please you and if that means that your bestie can move in until she get her shit together then I guess he’s good with it. I see trouble, though.”

“Well, I kinda figured that you would feel that way.” Bianca said with a sigh. She was definitely torn, because Tessa was the only best friend she had outside of her sisters. She never once judged her for any of her flaws and she certainly had many.

“You know I’m not crazy about Tessa. I’m not gonna even front.”

“I know,” Bianca said with a slight shake of the head.

“I’ve just never seen her being good for you. She drinks, she smokes, she pops pills, sometimes she does coke, has a snooty attitude, and she barely wears any clothes. You know its August girl. The heat is still out there which means that she probably ain’t got any clothes on as we speak.”

Bianca laughed a little. “Yep, that’s Tessa.” She agreed.

“You can’t have her walking around your husband like that. That shit ain’t cute.”

“You’re right, Sis.” Bianca responded. “But, I don’t know. Maybe if it’s just for a month and I’ll make sure that we talk and lay down some ground rules. I just don’t want to see her on the streets.”

“Girl, Tessa doesn’t have any kids. She fucks for money and she probably never stayed in her apartment anyway from fucking from hotel to hotel. Let’s face it; she’s about as ratchet as they come.”

“Come on,” Bianca cut in. “She’s not that bad. She probably has her ways and does certain things that y’all may not agree with, but she is my bestie and I love her regardless of how y’all feel about her.”

“One thing I can say B is that you have a big heart, because the bitch wouldn’t be moving in my house.” Lauren nonchalantly commented.

“I guess you can’t help how you feel,” she disappointedly said. “You are the least judgmental out of our sisters and that’s the only reason why I called you, but I understand your feelings.”

“I don’t want to sound harsh, you know I don’t. I just don’t want you to regret moving her in and being that you love her so much; I don’t wanna see y’all fall out just in case she fucks up.”

“Trust me, Sis. I understand totally. Thanks for the pep talk, but I’ll see once she and I sit down and talk with each other first.”

“Okaaaaay,” Lauren said.

“I’ll be over Kerry’s later. It’s the weekend and mom wants the kids. I’ll be free to hang out and have some fun with y’all.”

“Sounds good to me,” Lauren said. “I’ll see you later. Oh and bring a bottle or something.”

“Will do,” Bianca said as they ended their call.

Lauren took off her satin nightgown and proceeded to get in the garden tub full of warm water. She just wanted to relax her thoughts a bit. Here she was giving her sister some advice about what she should and shouldn’t do in her home, when she couldn’t figure out what the hell kind of changes she needed to make in her own. Rich definitely had her fucked up if he thought that he could just continue to slang good dick and not help out financially. Jamal may have been a low down, cheating dog, but he did take care of her. That was the least that he could do since he’d put her through so much.

As she relaxed in the warm tub of water, her phone alerted her of an incoming text message. She sighed, feeling like she didn’t want to be bothered at the moment. She didn’t move, but then five minutes later, another text came through.

“Kerry, I’m coming. Don’t bug me,” she said out loud, figuring that it was her sister who was never late for anything. So, she expected them to be on time, too. “You’re just gonna have to wait until I get there.” She continued. No sooner than she could get relaxed again, her phone alerted her of another text message. “Damnit now!” She exclaimed while leaning out of the garden tub to reach for the nearest towel to dry her hands. She then picked up the phone to read the messages.

You were supposed to be here by seven, heifa. I bet you probably still sleep. Watch you be on my head until late tonight. Call me back. Kerry

“I knew it was her ass,” Lauren uttered then opened up the next message. “She better not be wasting my damn text messages with this-” But, before she could get out foolishness, her heart sank down in her chest as she read the next message.

Hey baby. It’s been awhile. I’ve missed you and my lil man. Kiss him for me and tell him that daddy misses him very much. Jamal

“What the fuck?” Lauren whispered with a sour look on her face. She hadn’t spoken to him in three months. The last time she saw him was the day of Bianca’s wedding and he was supposed to be leaving town to get himself together.

I wonder if he’s left that nappy headed ass wife of his with her ratchet ass.
She quickly thought then proceeded on to the next message.

I’m glad that you decided to start cashing the checks. Please, take care of my boy. I love y’all. I know I was wrong for many things, but I promise that I’ll make it up to the both of you. I promise. Jamal.

“Wow,” she said as her heart fluttered. She still loved Jamal. He was that guy, but the wrong guy for her. If only he wasn’t married to a deranged, psycho ass bitch then they would’ve been good. She contemplated messaging him back, but then sat her phone back down. “Lauren, don’t you do it.” She coached herself.

There was no relaxing of any kind after reading those text messages. Jamal had her thinking, and he had her thinking hard. She appreciated the money that he was still sending, because without that she would be down on her luck, struggling to keep the bills paid. There was just no way could she ever imagine taking him back, even if he had left his wife for good. He’d hurt her too bad with the many secrets that he kept from her.

“I think it’s better if I just left it alone. Hell, maybe I need to get my number changed or something,” she whispered. However, she felt bad and wanted to reach out, because her son missed his daddy. It was just too much going on at the moment though, and she needed to figure it out first before she made that move.

“Damn,” she said, reaching over and turning the power off on her phone. She then closed her eyes as she rested her head back on the tub. She was going to get some relaxation to clear her thoughts if possible, one way or the other.

Chapter 2

Meanwhile in Marietta, GA, Janay was making her way down the hall and into the baby’s room to pick up Brison since he was crying. She held him close in her arms and rocked the eight month old as his sleepy eyes closed then opened back up to look in her face. She kissed him on his forehead and smiled at her beautiful baby boy. Apparently, he’d had a nightmare of some sort and just needed his mothers warm touch.

“Shhhh,” she said as she watched him doze back off to sleep.

Lately, she’d been extremely tired. Her memory seemed to be fading in and out. She’d been feeling some type of way. Maybe it was because she wanted so desperately to move back home to be closer with her parents and her sisters. Finn, her husband, had been working on the move back to Augusta, GA, but being the Assistant Pastor at his father’s church had them stuck in Marietta until they could get someone else to take his place.

She sighed, taking in a deep breath as thought after thought plagued her mind. Maybe it was postpartum depression. Even though Brison was eight months old, she’d read where a woman could get postpartum depression up to a year after given birth. Whatever it was had her cranky at times, feeling unworthy, unloved, and lonely. She didn’t even look at her son in the same way, because she felt like she wasn’t being a good enough mom to him.

As she continued to rock Brison in her arms, pacing back and forth in front of his crib; the house alarm sounded off. She knew that it was Finn entering the house. Apart of her smiled inside, knowing that her husband had made it home. He’d been gone overnight from a revival that he had to attend in Charlotte, NC. Every now and then he was asked to be a special guest at different churches. Unfortunately for her, it would sometimes require him to go out of town to perform his pastoral duties.

“Sweetie,” she heard him call out as he made his way down the long hallway.

“I’m in here, babe.” She said just above a whisper, trying not to wake Brison back up. The minute Finn entered the baby’s room, she looked over at him. “Shhhh,” she said. “He’s just going back to sleep.”

Finn stepped inside the room and walked over to her, giving her a light kiss on the lips. “Are you okay, sweetie?”

“Yeah,” she said as she gently laid Brison back in his crib.

“I’ve been calling you since early this morning to let you know that I was on my way back home. You never answered.”

Janay frowned as she looked around the room. “Where is my phone?” She asked, heading out of the room as Finn followed closely behind her.

“Sweetie, I called the house phone, too.” He said.

“Are you sure about that? I didn’t hear any phone ring.” She said as the entered their master bedroom.

“Babe,” Finn called out. “Look at me.” Janay turned to face her husband. “You’ve been acting really strange, lately.”

“I’m okay, babe.” She assured him, but she knew that she hadn’t been herself. She was highly confused as to what happened to her. Overnight she seemed like a changed person. She walked over to the big king sized bed and sat down. “Baby, I just want to move back home. I’m not feeling being here at all. I miss my mom and dad, not to mention my sisters. I just don’t like being here.” She said as a tear fell from her eye.

“Sweetie,” Finn said as he rushed to his wife’s side. He knew that she’d been under pressure after they ended up not moving back to her hometown right away. She’d done nothing but stood by him and the decisions that he’d made were only to continue to work with his father until he was well enough to handle things on his own. “It’s gonna be alright.” He said to her as he wrapped his arms around her.

“Nobody here likes me,” she said, feeling bad as hell. “Your mom despises me.”

“She doesn’t dislike you. Think about it baby, she has been trying to be so much nicer to you since I had that talk with her. She knows that if she can’t get along with you then she and I are going to have problems.”

“That’s the thing. You’re her only son, so I can understand why she feels a certain way. I just want her to give me a fair chance.”

Finn disappointedly shook his head. “She just threw us a dinner party a month ago to try to welcome you into the family. Even Aunt Lily was there to help you feel at home. You didn’t feel the love or the attempt to let you in?”

Janay thought back at the dinner party. Mrs. Carter definitely seemed different. It was as if she was attempting to make amends, but she was still skeptical.

“Plus, dad and the rest of the family love you. I think that now you have to get out of your feelings and allow her to be good to you.” Janay looked at him, still unsure as she continued to wipe her tears. “Can you do it for me, please?” He sincerely asked.

Janay didn’t respond right away as she looked off into space. She didn’t know what to think or what she wanted to do at the moment.

Finn could see the pain in her eyes and it hurt him to see his wife so distraught, because all he wanted to do was help her.

“If you want to go home and be with your family until you feel better then I won’t stop you. I will miss you and Brice, but I’ll visit as much as possible until we can get things situated. I just want you to be happy and to feel better.” He sincerely said, feeling somewhat torn between his loving feelings for his wife and the close relationship he shared with his mom.

He just wanted them to get along with each other and now that it seemed that his mom was coming around, Janay was actually getting more distant.

“Look,” he said wiping her eyes, and then kissing her on the lips. “Go shower, fix your hair up, and get dressed in something really sexy. It’s almost four o’clock so we have the rest of the evening to spend together. I just want to show you a nice time and shower you with my love.”

Janay smiled. Finn always had that magic touch and knew exactly what to do to make her feel better. For him to be thirty-three to her now thirty-nine years of age, he seemed so much older than her. He was in tune with her needs and always took care of her. They were close to being married two years now, but it seemed like twenty. She knew him better than he knew himself, and he knew her better than she knew herself. Regardless of what his mom thought about their union, she felt that they were destined to be together.

“I think that would be good for me. I need to spend some quality time with my fine husband.” She said with a smile on her face as she leaned over to kiss his soft lips again. “I’ve been feeling really lonely, lately.”

“I know, sweetie. I know,” he said. “Now go wash up and I’ll get Brison ready.”

“Thanks my love,” Janay said, feeling so much better. She got up and headed into the master bathroom to get herself together. Once she’d disappeared and Finn could hear the water running from the shower, he picked up the cordless phone sitting next to him and called his mom.

“Hi son,” Mrs. Carter spoke in a cheery tone. “How are you? Have you made it back from Charlotte?”

“Yeah, I’m home now. I just got in not long ago.”

“Good, how was the sermon?” She pondered.

“It was good, mom. You know it was a packed house. Our church is steadily growing with a congregation of almost 3000 people. However, Saint John’s Baptist church has a congregation of about 6000 people, doubling what we have.”

“Oh yes, I know,” Mrs. Carter said. “Pastor Williams doesn’t live in that big old, seven bedroom house for nothing.” She said, having known him and his wife for over twenty-years.  “He’s really good with the word too, but I know you showed up and showed out for them.”
